Echinocereus triglochidiatus flower - Mormon Lake, Arizona, US.
Known as Mojave Mound Cactus, Kingcup Cactus, or Claret Cup Hedgehog, Echinocereus triglochidiatus (Caryophyllales - Cactaceae) is small barrel-shaped cactus with stunning orange to red waxy flowers. It is native to California and is also found outside of California, but is confined to western North America (US and Mexico).
The Kingcup Cactus has a thick nectar chamber and many thready pink stamens at the center of the corolla. The flowers are pollinated by hummingbirds, which are the primary pollinators and must stick their entire head into the flower to reach the nectar chambers at the flower’s base.
